Steve Martin leads the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming documentary about the late comedy icon. The preview for Who Is Martin Mull? brings together friends and fellow performers to explore Mull’s unusual career across comedy, music, television, and art.

Netflix released the official trailer on September 21, 2026, ahead of the documentary’s debut next month. The film is directed by Neil Berkeley and the late Bob Saget, who worked on the project before his death. It is one of four Netflix documentaries arriving in October that celebrate major figures and institutions from comedy history.

Steve Martin appears alongside Tom Waits and David Alan Grier in the documentary. Their interviews offer personal reflections on Mull’s work and lasting influence. Archival footage also shows Mull discussing his creative journey and interests in his own words.

The trailer shows Mull’s lifelong passion for painting alongside his entertainment work. It shows how he continued creating art while becoming an unlikely television fixture. The documentary also revisits his time hosting the satirical series Fernwood 2 Night.

Patton Oswalt is also seen in the trailer, talking about Mull hosting The Tonight Show over 30 times.

The film also features an appearance by the late Fred Willard. His interview adds another link to Mull’s comedy world and broader circle of collaborators. The documentary was executive produced by Saget, Kevin S. Bright, Morgan Neville, and Caitrin Rogers.

Mull died in June 2024 at age 80 after decades of work across entertainment and art. Who Is Martin Mull? will premiere globally on Netflix on October 7, 2026.
