Rob Lowe Shares St. Elmo’s Fire 2 Update, Explains Why His Character Is More Interesting Now
Rob Lowe is peeling back the curtain on a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel. The 62-year-old actor also reflected on how the project could explore his character’s evolution.
Lowe recently spoke with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese, along with his co-stars from The Musical, Gillian Jacobs and Will Brill. During the interview, he shared a positive update on a sequel to the iconic 1985 coming-of-age drama, St. Elmo’s Fire.
“Yeah, I’m super excited about it,” the 9-1-1: Lone Star actor shared before confirming, “We’re trying to get the script right.”
Why Rob Lowe thinks revisiting the St. Elmo’s Fire characters is more interesting now
Rob Lowe played the saxophonist “frat boy” Billy Hicks in St. Elmo’s Fire. The actor is expected to reprise the character in the sequel.
When asked about how Billy could have changed after four decades, Lowe said, “I think the notion of exploring life at this age is arguably even more interesting than exploring life post-college.”
He added, “I do think last time you saw my character, he had a saxophone across his back, getting on a bus to go to New York. And I think he had the misfortune of arriving in New York at the exact same moment that sax solos were banned.”
Lowe concluded, “I think his claim to fame is probably that he played the sax solo on ‘Caribbean Queen.’ I think that was it. He got that sax solo in, and then that was the end.”
He had previously teased St. Elmo’s Fire 2 in a June 2025 interview with People. “We’re working on the script, and it’s really getting good,” Lowe said at the time. “I think it’s super valid to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life, because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — ‘What do I do when I get out of college?'”
Rob Lowe has returned to the big screen in the 2026 dark comedy film The Musical. It arrived in theaters on September 18.
