Rob Lowe & Gillian Jacobs’ 9/11 Musical Comedy Movie Releases Theaters Today
A dark comedy movie, starring Rob Lowe, Gillian Jacobs, and Tony Award winner Will Brill, is now playing in theaters nationwide as of September 18, 2026. The film arrives through Blue Harbor Entertainment and Variance Films after making its world premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
The Musical marks the feature directorial debut of Giselle Bonilla, who directs from a screenplay by Alexander Heller. Lowe also serves as an executive producer.
Set within a middle school drama department, the comedy follows a frustrated theater teacher whose personal resentment turns into an increasingly reckless attempt to sabotage his colleague.

The Musical follows Doug Leibowitz (Will Brill), a playwright who reluctantly teaches theater at a middle school while dreaming of taking his work to New York. His situation becomes complicated when he discovers that his colleague and former girlfriend, Abigail (Gillian Jacobs), is dating Principal Brady (Rob Lowe), an ambitious administrator focused on maintaining his polished public image.
Doug becomes upset by the relationship and decides to undermine Brady’s attempt to win the prestigious Blue Ribbon of Academic Excellence. He initially pretends to prepare his students for a production of West Side Story, but secretly develops a controversial original musical called Heroes about the events of 9/11.
Doug uses the students’ production as part of his plan to embarrass Brady in front of school officials. The show eventually features military costumes, Rudy Giuliani impersonations, and increasingly chaotic performances as Doug’s scheme spirals out of his control.
The 87-minute movie uses uncomfortable humor to explore jealousy, artistic ambition, workplace rivalries, and the lengths people can go to settle personal scores.
The Musical is now playing in theaters nationwide.
