James Gunn’s DCU Horror Movie Clayface Lands a Major Runtime Update
Clayface has received a new runtime update ahead of its theatrical release. The upcoming horror movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe has drawn attention for its horror-focused approach to the comic book character.
According to industry insider @Cryptic4KQual, the R-rated body horror movie is currently expected to run for around 1 hour and 45 minutes, or 105 minutes.
The 105-minute runtime is five minutes shorter than the 110-minute runtime reported in June 2026. Early test screenings have reportedly received positive reactions, with viewers describing the movie as a dark character study rather than a traditional superhero spectacle. Comparisons have reportedly been made to Joker, Vanilla Sky, The Substance, and The Incredible Hulk.

Directed by James Watkins, Clayface is based on a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hossein Amini. Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen, with Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Corr and Max Minghella as John Borelli also appearing in the cast.
The $40 million production is being positioned as a standalone psychological horror story within the DC Universe. The compact runtime could allow Watkins to maintain a tighter pace as Hagen deals with the physical and emotional consequences of his transformation.
The film reportedly avoids major crossover elements, including Batman appearances. Early screenings have reportedly shown a more grounded approach to the character’s powers, with Hagen experiencing disturbing physical mutations instead of turning into a giant CGI creature.
The story follows Hagen after a horrific facial disfigurement threatens his acting career. He eventually turns to an untested cosmetic compound in an attempt to restore his appearance, but the treatment causes his body to break down in increasingly disturbing ways.
Clayface is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 23, 2026.
