Why Zack Snyder Would Never Watch James Gunn’s Superman or Other DCU Projects
Zack Snyder has shut the door on James Gunn’s DC Universe, at least for now. The director confirmed he has skipped Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns entirely, telling Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that his reasons are emotional rather than creative.

Horowitz asked Snyder directly whether he had avoided all of Gunn’s DC output. “And no Supergirl, no Lanterns. You’re not watching any of that,” Horowitz said. “No,” Snyder answered. The Man of Steel director then framed the decision as private and emotional.
“Honestly, it’s just that — look, it’s a personal thing for me,” he said. “I want success for them, and I trust James’s aesthetic and his take. He has a very particular way of making movies and looking at things.”
He did not stop there. “It’s just a difficulty,” Snyder continued. “It’s wrapped up in other — it’s just got a lot of baggage.” Still, Snyder has not managed to escape Gunn’s DCU completely. Clips, jokes, and fan reactions reach him constantly. “It’s memed all over my X feed,” he said. Horowitz pressed him on whether he had caught fragments. “Yeah,” the director added. “It’s crazy.”
Snyder’s “too soon” may have a deadline attached. James Gunn’s DC contract reportedly expires in 2027 with no new extension, and a SnyderVerse return is in play through the Paramount-WBD merger. The Dark Knight Returns is also ready to go. That same merger would have Snyder’s Sucker Punch director’s cut on Paramount’s desk, and he told Horowitz it is “definitely on the docket.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Snyder confirmed he considered Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Flashpoint Batman and revealed that Zoe Saldana nearly played Lois Lane in Man of Steel. He also said he intends to direct episodes of his 300 prequel series, though he kept plot details under wraps.
For now, the next DC project Zack Snyder watches may be one he directed himself.
