Mahershala Ali goes full action mode in the violent opening scene of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The newly released clip immediately recalls the physical intensity and martial prowess fans anticipated from his long-planned Blade role.

The scene shows Ali fighting several people before stabbing them during a tense confrontation. His character moves quickly through the attack, giving the film a hard-edged action opening. There’s a voice-over talking about a man asking the Prophet who deserves the best treatment and respect. The prophet repeatedly says, ‘Mother’ (3 times), which connects the scene to the film’s title.

What is Mahershala Ali’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother movie about?

The film is about Latif, a devout Muslim and former contract killer, raising his children alone after his wife’s death. He wants to leave his violent profession behind, but circumstances pull him back into danger.

Writer-director Bassam Tariq explores faith, family, fatherhood, and motherhood through Latif’s story. The title draws from an Islamic hadith that stresses the importance of mothers.

Ali’s connection to Blade also adds more excitement to the movie’s action. Tariq was previously supposed to direct Marvel’s film, while Ali spent significant time preparing for the role. That training later became useful for his work on this movie.

John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito and Tramell Tillman round out the primary cast. Cho delivers a standout turn as an Army veteran turned evangelical pastor, while Esposito and Tillman feature in key supporting roles.

Ali has described the movie as the start of his “action era.” Explaining why the role was different from his earlier work, he told PEOPLE, “I always die when the action starts. So this is the first time I actually got to do the action.”

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is scheduled to hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on September 25, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios will release the film, with a wider rollout planned for October.
