Netflix’s Oscar Chances Suddenly Look Much Worse As Acclaimed Director Moves to Warner Bros.

Netflix has just lost one of its most notable directors, diminishing its future Oscar chances. The filmmaker had previously given a slew of award-winning movies to the streamer.

According to Variety, Noah Baumbach has signed a three-year, first-look agreement for features at Warner Bros. The Oscar-nominated writer and director previously had a long exclusive deal with Netflix.

Baumbach’s new deal with Warner Bros. will take effect in 2027. His first project under the agreement will be released through Clockwork, WB’s indie label run by Christian Parkes, who has worked for NEON in the past.

The untitled movie will be written, directed, and produced by Baumbach. Meanwhile, David Heyman and LuckyChap will serve as producers.

Further details about the project remain under wraps. However, sources with direct knowledge about the script say the movie will center on two college students in New York City. The film will receive a wide theatrical release, marking Baumbach’s first such release since entering his Netflix partnership. His departure ends a partnership that produced several films recognized by the Academy.

What movies did Noah Baumbach make for Netflix?

Baumbach’s previous four movies were released on Netflix. These include The Meyerowitz Stories, Marriage Story, White Noise, and Jay Kelly. All four movies have received widespread critical acclaim.

Marriage Story, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, earned six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. For her incredible performance in the movie, Laura Dern took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Baumbach has received four Academy Award nominations in his career, including three for writing and one for Best Picture as a producer of Marriage Story. In 2023, he received the Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Barbie, directed by his wife Greta Gerwig.

His credits also include other acclaimed movies such as Frances Ha, Mistress America, De Palma, While We’re Young, Greenberg, and many more. He also co-wrote Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou with Wes Anderson.
