Sucker Punch: Zack Snyder Explains Why Director’s Cut Is Taking So Long
Zack Snyder has addressed the delay surrounding the Director’s Cut of his 2011 action film Sucker Punch. The filmmaker still plans to release it and has now explained why he can’t.
During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder revealed why the Director’s Cut of Sucker Punch has not hit the screen yet. The filmmaker explained that he has to wait for certain licenses to expire before the director’s cut can be released.
“It’s one of those things where every time I call over to Warner Bros. to say, ‘Okay, we should do the director’s cut of Sucker Punch,’ obviously there’s a lot of conversations,” Snyder shared.
He went on to explain, “There’s all these weird things, like you have to wait for some licenses to completely finish. Because, say I’ve bought the original Sucker Punch… and I’m showing it on my streaming service or somewhere, and then I release the Director’s Cut. Apparently that diminishes the value of the thing that I bought. That’s what I’ve been told.”
So, an official release window for Sucker Punch Director’s Cut still remains uncertain.
What is Sucker Punch about?
Sucker Punch is a fantasy action film based on an original concept by Zack Snyder. The filmmaker described the movie as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.”
The movie follows Babydoll, a young woman who is committed to a psychiatric institution after her mother’s death. There she slips into a fantasy world where she and her fellow inmates are strong warriors. They team up to collect a series of special items in order to escape.
Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning in the lead as Babydoll. The star-studded cast also includes Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, and more.
Despite its modest box-office performance at the time of its release, Sucker Punch eventually gained a cult following.
