Narnia: First Look at Emma Mackey’s White Witch Reveals a Wild Glam-Rock Costume
Emma Mackey‘s first look as White Witch from Greta Gerwig‘s new Narnia movie has teased a world inspired by music. The upcoming project will be a reboot of the long-running popular franchise.
The first look of Mackey’s Jadis, the White Witch, in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has revealed a glam-rock outfit for the antagonist. Further, the director has made it clear that her film will be a rock-inspired fantasy.
Speaking to Empire, Gerwig expressed her ambitions for the awaited Narnia movie. “I wanted a rock opera. I wanted it to be big and transporting.”
The musical influence behind Narnia’s unexpected new look
Greta Gerwig wanted to draw inspiration from British rock music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. In fact, the bold new vision for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is inspired by several highly popular artists, including David Bowie and the rock band The Who, among many others.
“David Bowie saved my life. Paul McCartney saved my life. David Gilmour saved my life. Pete Townshend saved my life. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant…” Gerwig said. “When I heard their music, I had this deep sense of [thinking], ‘You’re gonna be okay.'”
“Narnia is literally a world made out of music,” the director explained. “It is a world sung to life by Aslan, and rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.”
The Magician’s Nephew will be based on the sixth book in C. S. Lewis’s iconic series. The book was originally published in 1955.
The ensemble cast of the movie also includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.
Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt will compose the soundtrack for the fantasy film. They have already worked with Gerwig on her 2023 blockbuster Barbie.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew hits theaters on February 12, 2027, followed by its Netflix debut on April 2, 2027.
