Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman addressed whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day could cross $1 billion domestically, as reported by Variety. The film has earned $936.773 million at the North American box office after 47 days. It recently overtook Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million) as the highest-grossing domestic release ever.

Rothman spoke with Variety at the Resident Evil Fantastic Fest premiere about the film’s historic run. He admitted he never anticipated a post-COVID movie reaching these heights. “I didn’t think post-COVID any movie could open over $300 million,” Rothman said. He added, “No, I would never have had the hubris to do that.”

When asked about the $1 billion domestic milestone, Rothman did not commit to a definitive answer. However, he expressed confidence about a more immediate record. “I know that in the next couple of days, at some point, it will become the highest grossing movie in the history of North America,” he said.

Brand New Day opened to a record-breaking $360 million domestically and $932 million globally. Meanwhile, its opening day alone generated $169.84 million. The film then reached $1 billion worldwide in just six days. It currently stands at $2.45 billion globally, thus ranking as the third-highest-grossing film of all time. Only Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) sit above it.

However, Variety noted that reaching $1 billion domestically might prove unlikely without a theatrical re-release. The film would still need roughly $63 million more to hit that unprecedented threshold. As of now, no movie in box office history has ever crossed $1 billion at the North American box office alone.
