HBO’s Great World War II Show Gets New Movie Release & More for Milestone Anniversary

HBO Max has announced a new documentary movie to celebrate one of its most successful television shows of all time. The documentary will give fans an exclusive look inside the production of the series.

Band of Brothers: Legacy will premiere on HBO Max on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. It is a documentary movie that serves as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the critically acclaimed HBO Original limited series, Band of Brothers.

Created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the show is a 2001 war drama miniseries that dramatizes the story of Easy Company, a US Army unit, and chronicles their participation in World War II. The series is based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 non-fiction book of the same name.

Band of Brothers became an overwhelming critical success, earning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries in 2002, among other accolades.

Band of Brothers: Legacy documentary revisits the HBO World War II classic

Band of Brothers: Legacy dives deeper into the show’s production with exclusive behind-the-scenes stories. The documentary features interviews with the cast, including Damian Lewis, Neal McDonough, Ron Livingston, Michael Cudlitz, and Capt. Dale Dye, USMC (Ret.), David Schwimmer, and more.

The documentary’s trailer opens with McDonough saying, “We were blessed and fortunate enough to be able to portray lives of absolutely true heroes.” Lewis then adds, “We were a group of actors really wanting to do good work, wanting to do the thing right.”

The preview offers a glimpse into the relentless hard work that went into the making of Band of Brothers. It explores the show’s lasting impact and features inspiring anecdotes about the real-life men portrayed in the series.

Additionally, Band of Brothers: Legacy will show some archival footage for the first time. Viewers will also see real photographs of Easy Company from World War II.

The documentary is directed by former Green Beret Chase Millsap. Tom Hanks returns as executive producer alongside Gary Goetzman. Meanwhile, Kirk Saduski, Richard Arlook, and Sean Mullin serve as producers, with Spencer Millsap as director of photography and editor.
