Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has surpassed The Avengers (2012) at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo data as of August 30. The epic action fantasy film has grossed $1.553 billion globally, overtaking The Avengers’ $1.521 billion lifetime total. The achievement places The Odyssey as the fourteenth-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
The film earned $564 million domestically and $989 million in international territories. It opened to $264.1 million worldwide, marking the highest opening ever for director Christopher Nolan. The opening surpassed The Dark Knight Rises’ previous record of $249 million for the filmmaker.
The Odyssey also became the highest-grossing R-rated film in cinema history. It additionally stands as the second-highest-grossing film of 2026 behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film surpassed Avatar (2009) to become the highest-grossing IMAX film ever.
IMAX 70mm screenings drove significant demand throughout the theatrical run. Originally scheduled to end August 17, IMAX 70mm showings were extended until September 16. The extension came after sold-out screens for seven consecutive weeks pushed IMAX stock prices to all-time highs.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. Universal Pictures produced the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem with a $250 million budget. Nolan described the project as the largest and most challenging production of his career.
The Odyssey premiered at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on July 6, 2026. It received critical acclaim with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 504 reviews. The film became Nolan’s first to surpass $1 billion since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
