How to Train Your Dragon 2 Just Got an Early Seal of Approval From Hiccup

The much-awaited live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is promising to follow in the footsteps of its animated predecessor, having already garnered a glowing review from Hiccup actor Mason Thames. In a recent interview, Thames shared his thoughts on the upcoming Universal Pictures sequel and stated that he is already “very proud” of the movie.

Mason Thames hypes up How to Train Your Dragon 2 one year before release

While speaking to ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender about his latest dark comedy thriller, Idiots, Mason Thames also opened up about the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Thames praised the sequel, claiming that the team behind the project “[took] what we did with the first movie and [brought] it to a new level,” both in its “worldbuilding and in maturing it up a little bit.” He added, “I think audiences will really enjoy what we did. But I’ve seen a couple things. I’ve seen a couple of pictures and videos of me on Toothless, and it’s looking really cool.”

The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon was a huge success at the box office when it was released in 2025, taking $636.5 million globally during its theatrical run, as per Box Office Mojo. Accordingly, expectations are running high for How to Train Your Dragon 2, which will adapt the 2014 animated film of the same name.

Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the sequel will once again star Mason Thames in the lead role as Hiccup, with Nico Parker, Nick Frost, and Gerard Butler also reprising their roles. New faces joining the franchise include Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Phil Dunster, with Cate Blanchett debuting as Valka, after previously voicing the character in the animated films.

The fantasy sequel is currently on track to hit theaters on June 11, 2027.
