The Odyssey Beats The Dark Knight Rises for Nolan’s Biggest Box Office Record

Christopher Nolan just rewrote his own box office history with The Odyssey, and the numbers are staggering. The epic adaptation has officially dethroned a fan-favorite blockbuster to become the filmmaker’s biggest global earner ever.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo. The film has now earned $1.1 billion worldwide after four weekends in theaters. That total surpasses The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion), making it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever.

The epic adaptation of Homer’s poem has earned $461.1 million domestically and $643.6 million internationally. It currently stands as the second-highest-grossing film of 2026, behind Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($1.26 billion). Additionally, it has overtaken Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 ($1.09 billion) for the third spot before settling into second.

The Odyssey also holds the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film of 2026 in both domestic and international markets. It ranks as the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time behind Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33 billion worldwide). The film is also the highest-grossing title in the careers of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson globally.

Nolan’s filmography has now collectively grossed over $7 billion worldwide. Universal holds his all-time record along with his fourth-highest earner, the seven-time Oscar winner Oppenheimer ($975.8 million). The Odyssey earned an A CinemaScore from audiences and became the fifth film of 2026 to cross $1 billion.

Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures, praised the filmmaker’s track record. “Christopher Nolan has earned audiences’ trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events, and The Odyssey is him operating at the peak of his powers,” Orr said.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of Distribution at Universal Pictures International, also highlighted Nolan’s global appeal. “A singular filmmaker with the international following of Christopher Nolan is uniquely fit to adapt Homer’s ancient poem,” she said.
