Minions & Monsters’ Box Office Shows Why It Hits Digital So Early

Minions & Monsters just made some unwanted franchise history at the box office. The animated sequel’s underwhelming theatrical run explains Universal’s decision to fast-track its digital release.

Minions & Monsters’ box office returns are the lowest across franchise

Minions & Monsters has earned $450.4 million worldwide so far, according to Box Office Mojo. The animated film collected $169.7 million domestically and $280.7 million internationally. As a result, that total still sits $94 million behind Despicable Me, the franchise’s previous lowest earner.

The film opened to $37 million across 4,243 theaters on its debut weekend. It launched on July 1 and eventually expanded to a widest release of 4,244 locations. However, daily grosses dropped steadily after the opening stretch through Independence Day weekend.

Universal Pictures distributed the PG-rated adventure, which runs one hour and 30 minutes. The movie follows the Minions in 1920s Hollywood as they search for frightening creatures for a monster film they are producing. Its domestic total reached roughly $169.7 million through 34 days of theatrical release in the United States.

Japan remains the film’s last major theatrical market yet to report numbers. That release could still push the worldwide total noticeably higher in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, even with Japan’s contribution, the film may ultimately finish as the lowest-grossing entry across all Minions and Despicable Me movies.

Universal has meanwhile scheduled an early digital home release for August 11 in response to the softer performance. Studios typically hold blockbuster-level releases in theaters for much longer before moving to digital platforms. The accelerated timeline therefore allows the studio to generate additional revenue through digital sales before the title eventually lands on streaming.

Consequently, the decision reflects the film’s clear underperformance relative to franchise expectations and prior installments. Minions & Monsters still faces a steep climb to match even the original Despicable Me’s final tally globally.
