The Blair Witch Project Scores Surprising New Release Fans Will Love Ahead of Reboot

Lionsgate has surprised fans of the original The Blair Witch Project with a new release. The announcement comes just as the studio is developing a new reboot of the horror franchise. While the original movie’s cast won’t return in the reboot, fans can watch them in their iconic roles in a new light with its latest release.

Lionsgate Limited is releasing The Blair Witch Project on VHS, titled the Be Kind, Rewind edition. The new physical release may be a throwback to an old media format, but it also includes several new additions.

What horror fans can expect from The Blair Witch Project’s new VHS edition

The new Blair Witch Project VHS release features the filmmaker-approved 2024 restored theatrical cut from the original Hi8 and 16mm elements. This marks the first time that the version will be available in the U.S. Of course, it includes a “special-edition playable VHS transfer” of the original movie.

The 2024 restoration used the original source to improve upon the film fans watched back in 1999. It restored the film’s native frame rate and retained the eerie feel of a camcorder recording. The new version also includes updated colors and an improved sound mix.

The Blair Witch Project was written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez. It stars Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Joshua Leonard. Following its release, the movie became a global sensation, grossing almost $250 million at the box office.

Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot will be directed by Dylan Clark. His previous projects include short films like Catcher, Storytime, and Hatched. The reboot is also being produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, with Leonard and Williams serving as executive producers. It will focus on a “family that goes on a camping trip but goes missing one by one after they hear strange noises in the forest.”

The Blair Witch Project Be Kind, Rewind Edition on VHS releases on October 13, 2026.
