‘I Have Moved On’: Blade MCU Movie With Mahershala Ali Is Never Happening

Marvel’s Blade reboot featuring Mahershala Ali was announced in 2019. After years of delays, rewrites, and changes in director and production, the actor finally confirmed what fans had long suspected. His version of Blade isn’t happening.

In an interview with GQ, the Academy Award winner was asked about the status of the long-awaited Blade reboot. Ali replied, “I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me.” If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.”

He then added, “[Marvel] didn’t want to do it, they should answer that question.”

Where Marvel’s Blade stands after Mahershala Ali’s comments

Marvel Studios has not released any official statements in response to Ali’s comments, leaving the future of Blade uncertain. Ever since its announcement in 2019, the movie suffered constant delays and changes in the creative team.

Marvel first revealed Mahershala Ali as the new Blade at SDCC 2019, shortly after his second Oscar win. Ali also made a small voice cameo role as Blade in 2021’s Eternals. Besides that, he has never actually appeared as the character on screen.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, in a Happy Sad Confused podcast, said, “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.”

That leaves Marvel with several unanswered questions. The studio could eventually revive Blade under new direction, or introduce the character in another MCU project before pursuing a solo film.

For now, the future of a Blade reboot remains uncertain unless Marvel makes major changes in its production plans.
