Heat 3 Is Already Seemingly Likely Despite One Big Hurdle Surrounding Second Movie

Heat 2 hasn’t even started filming yet, and Michael Mann‘s acclaimed crime saga is gearing up for a third installment behind the scenes. After a lengthy development process, production for Heat 2 is finally expected to begin this November.

Meanwhile, according to a new report from The Wrap, a source within the Heat 2 camp claims that there is a third movie in the plans. The report also claims the next installment would further expand the world of Heat and its related properties.

The news of Heat 3 will excite longtime fans of the 1995 classic, especially with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale expected to lead Heat 2. The film adapts Michael Mann’s 2022 novel, co-written by Meg Gardiner, and tells both a prequel and sequel story.

While the news comes as exciting as it is, there’s one major obstacle standing in the way of Heat 3 becoming a reality.

What needs to happen with Heat 2 in order to ensure Heat 3 winds up being made?

Although a third Heat movie is on the cards, its future will likely depend on how Heat 2 performs at the box office. A strong opening alone is not enough; it should attract an audience for several weeks and receive a positive reception. That’s easier said than done.

TheWrap reports that Heat 2’s production budget fluctuated wildly through development. Mann’s negotiations pushed the number anywhere between $150 million and $220 million, before settling closer to $165 million. With that sort of money, the movie should make at least $300 million to turn a profit.

Someone close to Heat 2 sounds pretty confident about clearing that mark easily. One source in the production said, “‘Heat 2’ could do for men of different ages what ‘Barbie’ did for women,” pointing to crossing $500 million worldwide.

Still, that kind of box office success is not guaranteed, given how Heat 2 carries the weight of one of the most respected epic crime films ever made. For now, fans can only look forward to Heat 2’s success both critically and commercially to get Heat 3.
