Tom Holland Reveals How Spider-Man’s Most Emotional Scene Came Together

Tom Holland explains how the most emotional Spider-Man scene came together. The British actor delivered one of the most iconic and heartbreaking scenes in Avengers: Infinity War with a slight improvisation of the moment.

Ahead of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day release, Holland appeared on an episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, hosted by Josh Harrowitz. During the interview, he was asked whether the “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good,” scene was written on the page or whether he workshopped it in the moment. The actor said, “It definitely wasn’t written, as long as it was, on the page, and maybe it was just my insatiable need to milk that moment.”

“But I think the ‘I don’t want to go’ was maybe something that I improvised,” recalled the web-slinger’s actor, “Or if it wasn’t improvised, it was that I kept saying it over and over again.” He revealed that one of his acting exercises taught him that repeating a line of dialogue is a “really, really effective way” of instigating emotions.

The Spider-Man star further explained, “So I think that scene is an amalgamation of some acting exercises, Downey improvising, myself improvising, and also the [Russo] brothers giving us the perfect floor to dance on in those big moments.”

Furthermore, he commended the directors for letting actors decide how their characters would react to a particular scene. He said, “Joe and Ant [Anthony] are such great collaborators that they are not afraid to put you in the spot and say, ‘What do you think Peter would do in this moment?’ And I think that is why the movies feel so personal even if they are so big.”

Will Tom Holland return for Avengers: Secret Wars or pass the Spider-Man mantle?

While Holland’s fans are already excited for his next appearance in the MCU, his role in Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t been revealed yet.

Moreover, in the same podcast, he stated that he “has no idea” what Secret Wars is about. That actor is being kept in the dark about the plot details for the Avengers’ sequel, thanks to his history with spoilers. The end of Brand New Day could hint at his appearance in the movie, but as of now, nothing is confirmed.

Additionally, he also spoke about passing the mantle to the next web-slinger, Miles Morales. The animated Spider-Man movie is slated to release months after Secret Wars. After portraying Peter Parker since 2016, Holland stated that passing the baton to his successor is one of his biggest goals.

Spider-Man 4 will release in theaters on July 31.
