Spider-Man: How Tom Holland’s New MCU Costume Solves Zendaya’s Extremely Gross Fear

Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man has appeared in different suits across movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is worth noting that wearing a costume for 12 hours and shooting intense action sequences is difficult for any actor. However, the latest upgraded suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day puts one of Zendaya‘s strangest fears to rest.

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Holland was shown an old Spider-Man: Homecoming promotional video of Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. In the clip, she admitted being always worried that Holland could get sick inside his erstwhile tight Spider-Man mask, leaving him trapped inside the one-piece costume.

Looking back at the old interview, Holland admitted the concern had crossed his mind as well. “It was definitely something that crossed my mind,” he said, adding, “I think that in reality I knew that if that did happen, I could pull the eyes out, grab the eye tray, and I could just rip… There’s a rip cord. There’s an emergency… It’s not designed that way, but I’m pretty sure I could have done that.”

Luckily, that’s no longer necessary. The British actor explained that after working alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home, he realized how much more comfortable their suits were. This lines up with another interview in which Holland mentioned that they had zips everywhere and could take their mask off easily.

“Now in the new suit… I have a zip at the back of my head which allows me to take the mask off to breathe,” he revealed. “Imagine that. You can actually breathe.”

The interview also touched on the long-anticipated Spider-Man symbiote suit. Referring to Tobey’s black suit in Spider-Man 3, Holland said that he loved that design and said bringing such a design to live action won’t be easy.

“I think if we ever got to do a black suit in Spider-Man, I don’t know how we would tackle that challenge because they did it so well in the game,” he said. “I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar to the one in the game without having a CG component.”

When the conversation shifted to rumors that Spider-Man could get a symbiote suit in Avengers: Secret Wars, Holland quickly shut them down. “I swear to you, I have no idea what Secret Wars is about.”

For now, Marvel fans can only wait to see whether the symbiote suit makes its debut in the MCU. Meanwhile, they can catch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters tomorrow, July 31, 2026.
