Tom Holland Confirms Sony’s Wildest Spider-Man Crossover Plan Almost Happened
Tom Holland revealed he came dangerously close to playing Spider-Man in a Sony movie. Holland’s character has never made it into Sony’s Spider-Man universe as he’s a part of the MCU.
The 30-year-old actor, who is currently promoting his latest release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, appeared on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. When asked about making it into Sony’s universe, the actor spilled that a plan was discussed where the Brit would indeed have a crossover moment. Things did not work out ultimately.
Holland said, “I think that Tom Rothman is a really smart guy, and I think that he was building this universe, and they had this plan to kind of merge the worlds at some point. And I think that they just never found the right time to do so. I think it was on the cards.” He also added, “There were never any battles of like, ‘We want you to be in this movie, and ‘I don’t want to be in this movie.’ That never happened. It was just like, ‘We’ll get there. We just never got there.”
How Sony’s Spider-Man Universe evolved without the MCU
Initially, Sony’s Spider-Man universe kicked off with Sam Raimi’s trilogy. With Tobey Maguire taking on the superhero mantle, the first two movies were a significant success. However, Sony’s universe developed without the web-slinger actually featuring in it later on. This is also the reason it’s called the Venom-verse. The movies in this universe mainly revolve around the supporting characters and villains from the Spider-Man comic book.
The list of movies includes Venom, released back in 2018. Next up, Venom: Let There Be Carnage dropped in 2021. This was followed by Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and Venom: The Last Dance. Sony also has a TV series named The Daily Bugle, which was released in 2022.
Interestingly, Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits did show Tom Holland as Spider-Man. As fans’ expectations shot through the roof following this scene, nothing fruitful came of it.
