Karl Urban‘s martial arts movie Mortal Kombat II is coming to HBO Max later this month. Released in May 2026, the movie debuts on the streaming platform, offering fans a new way to experience this action-packed sequel.

Mortal Kombat II is set to release exclusively on HBO Max on July 24. The streamer also announced that it would release an American Sign Language (ASL) version, making the movie accessible to a wider audience. Justin Perez performs the ASL version, while Rosa Lee Timm directs it using Visual Vernacular. It is a storytelling style that combines ASL, facial expressions, mime, and body movement to convey highly visual stories.

Mortal Kombat II draws inspiration from the popular video game franchise of the same name created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The sequel brings back several familiar faces, with Karl Urban making his debut as fan-favorite fighter Johnny Cage. As the warriors prepare for the long-awaited Mortal Kombat tournament, they must stop the ruthless Shao Kahn before his dark rule threatens the future of Earthrealm and its defenders.

Mortal Kombat II stars Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Damon Herriman, Tati Gabrielle, Martyn Ford, with Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The movie received positive reactions from many fans for expanding the franchise’s story, intense tournament action, and brutal fight sequences it is best known for. During its theatrical run, Mortal Kombat II earned a 64% Tomatometer and an 87% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. As of writing, the film has grossed $129 million worldwide against a budget of $80 million.

Simon McQuoid, who directed Mortal Kombat, returned to direct the sequel alongside co-producing it with Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, James Wan, and Toby Emmerich. Jeremy Slater, best known for creating Moon Knight and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, wrote the screenplay.

Mortal Kombat will stream on HBO Max from July 24.
