Ryan Reynolds Rediscovers His Greatest Strength in the Hilarious Mayday Trailer
Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh are set to star in the upcoming Apple TV movie Mayday. For Reynolds, this looks to be a return to form, and the star is rediscovering his greatest strength.
“When hot-shot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy ‘Assassin’ Kelly is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines,” reads the official synopsis. “Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast – but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue, and a bond neither saw coming?”
Ryan Reynolds’ return to more straightforward comedy is welcomed
For years, Reynolds made a name for himself in the world of Hollywood for his excellent roles in comedy films. Prior to his time as Deadpool, the star was mostly known for some stellar comedic roles, including in projects like Waiting…, Van Wilder, The Change-Up, and more. While the star has always dabbled in the world of action movies, it wasn’t until the 2010s, and more specifically after Deadpool’s success, that saw him appearing in a ton of action films.
His roles in projects like The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Hobbs & Shaw, Free Guy, and Red Notice have always retained comedic elements, but Mayday seems to be a return to form for Reynolds. While still having action elements, the movie seems to feature Reynolds as more of a comedic character, stuck alongside Kenneth Branagh’s ex-KGB agent who is leading the charge. This lets Reynolds to lean back into his comedy roots while still retaining some action elements.
More importantly, this also lets Reynolds take a bit of a breather from the world of straight-up action. He’s been involved heavily in the world of superheroes and action for some time now. He’ll also be doing so again in the future as he steps back into the MCU for some big Avengers movies. For Reynolds, to get back into the world of comedy would not only be huge for the star, but also for audiences, who came to know him as one of the funniest leading men in Hollywood.
