Robert De Niro’s New Netflix Movie Could Redeem Legend After Terrible 2025
The trailer for Robert De Niro‘s upcoming Netflix movie, The Whisper Man, is out now, and it looks terrifyingly good. It seems like De Niro’s latest collaboration with the streamer could be the key to redeeming him from a disappointing theatrical run last year. Before the upcoming horror thriller film’s debut on August 28, the Academy Award winner previously worked with Netflix on the acclaimed 2019 film The Irishman and the 2025 miniseries Zero Day.
“When his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer looks to his estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as ‘The Whisper Man,'” reads the official synopsis.
The Whisper Man is directed by James Ashcroft, with Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer writing the screenplay. It is based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Alex North. It features De Niro playing a retired detective whose old serial killer case comes back to haunt him and his family. The movie also stars Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill.
Why could Netflix’s The Whisper Man redeem Robert De Niro’s terrible 2025 run?
Watching the first trailer for The Whisper Man, I knew that this wasn’t your typical crime thriller movie. The trailer does a good job of showcasing the film’s eeriness and suspense. I really felt the tension and terror that the main characters were feeling. Its chilling atmosphere and aesthetic perfectly set up the film’s dark tone and high-stakes psychological story. Seeing a glimpse of De Niro’s performance and chemistry with Scott’s character, I’m convinced that we’ll get another great performance from the veteran actor.
After starring in last year’s The Alto Knights and Tin Soldier, Netflix’s The Whisper Man is definitely something that De Niro needs at the moment to break away from nearly identical power-figure roles. Both movies bombed at the box office and were universally panned by critics. The Alto Knights received a 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the Tin Soldier has an 8% RT score. Judging from the trailer, I believe that De Niro’s upcoming portrayal as a weathered, trauma-ridden detective and father in The Whisper Man could deliver something interesting and exciting for fans who weren’t able to enjoy his most recent movies. The new Netflix movie actually mrks De Niro’s return to the horror genre over two decades after starring alongside Dakota Fanning in 2005’s Hide and Seek.
