Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Raises 1 Big Question About His Career
The Odyssey hitting theaters later this month raises one big question for Christopher Nolan’s career.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows the treacherous journey home for the Greek king Odysseus following the Trojan War. On his expedition, Odysseus encounters a series of mythical beings, including Sirens and the Cyclops Polyphemus.
The Odyssey’s A-list cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the movie events of the year. The initial tracking has Nolan’s blockbuster opening is between $80 and $100 million in North America. Due to historic PLF presales and a positive reaction following the premiere, don’t be surprised if The Odyssey opens even higher.
Is Christopher Nolan officially too big to fail?
Nolan is as close to bulletproof as a director can be. Ever since 2008’s The Dark Knight, Nolan’s movies have been events. He is one of the few directors whose name alone can be the primary driver for interest. It’s a short list that includes names like Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and Steve Spielberg.
Nolan is bigger than all three of those directors right now. His last movie, Oppenheimer, is an adult drama that, aside from an impressive recreation of the Trinity test, mostly features scenes of men talking in rooms. The movie grossed over $975 million worldwide and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Could Tarantino, Scorsese, and Spielberg produce that success in 2026? The answer is no.
Even Nolan’s so-called “failures” aren’t true disappointments. Tenet, Nolan’s mind-bending espionage thriller, was released during the height of the pandemic in September 2020. The movie made $365 million worldwide at a time when theaters were either closed or had significant restrictions. That’s more of a miracle than it is a failure.
At this point, I’m not sure what Nolan could do to fail. Maybe it would be hard for him to turn a studio comedy into a movie that grossed $300 million. I’ll say this: I wouldn’t bet against Nolan. Every single studio would line up to work with Nolan if he wanted to make a comedy. That’s how much his name means to the business. He is the director with the most power in Hollywood.
Right now, Nolan is too big to fail. If The Odyssey somehow grosses over $1 billion, it might be his most impressive feat to date. Nolan still has his fastball, and until the critical acclaim and box office receipts decrease, he’ll remain at the top.
The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17, 2026.
