Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Shaped The Odyssey in 1 Major Way

Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey takes inspiration from his experience with The Dark Knight. In an exclusive interview, the director revealed more about how he approached his upcoming movie with prior filmmaking experiences.

Christopher Nolan reveals how The Dark Knight inspired The Odyssey

Nolan is known for pushing the boundaries to make his movies as realistic as possible, and the experience of shooting sequences in The Dark Knight helped him do that by filming the entire movie on an IMAX camera. With his upcoming film, The Odyssey, he hit another milestone.

In an interview with Collider, Nolan was asked about the changes he faced in the editing structure with IMAX. He replied, “It’s been an evolution. When we first started shooting IMAX, we were the first filmmakers to do it for a dramatic theatrical feature. We did it on The Dark Knight. It’s something I’d wanted to do since I was a kid, and we were given a rule book this thick of all the things you can and can’t do. What we learned, really, over time is that actually you can. It’s more versatile in that you can use the IMAX frame in a way that’s more analogous to regular filmmaking.”

Moreover, the director spoke about how he modified the camera lenses to shoot The Dark Knight sequences. He also stated that the more they worked with the format, the more they had to be careful with the framing of the scenes, which, according to him, “had to be relatively centered,” to adapt to different aspect ratios of theater screens.

For more immersion in the action scenes, when mixing the frames with IMAX, they used the greater frame area for peripheral vision, “moving the camera closer and further away, rather than zooming in or looking at things in two-dimensional terms.”

However, with The Odyssey, he said, “we’re making sure that in every theater that it goes to, it’s playing on the largest screen possible.” His upcoming movie was filmed using a customised IMAX camera requested by the production team, which included a blip to cover the loud noise the camera is known for.

The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’O, Zendaya, Elliot Page, and more, will be out in theaters on July 17, 2026.
