Despicable Me 5 Teased After Minions & Monsters, But There’s a Catch
There might be a Despicable Me 5 but the makers are facing quite the challenge. News of a potential addition to the beloved franchise comes with the release of Minions & Monsters. The latest animated film is set in the Despicable Me universe and is the third standalone Minions film, following Minions and Minions: The Rise of Gru.
What is the update on Despicable Me 5?
Speaking to Deadline during the Minions & Monsters promotional run, producer and Illumination head honcho Chris Meledandri touched on the possibility of Despicable Me 5. He also let the publication in on a key element missing in the creative process. Meledandri, during the conversation at the Annecy International Film Festival, said, “In the Despicable Me world, it’s so hard to find a story that ignites the level of interest… so there’s always conversation… we’re always searching to see when and if something ignites that interest, but haven’t found it yet.”
This isn’t the first time makers have commented on a fifth installment, though. Through 2024 and 2025, Chris Renaud, co-director of Despicable Me 1, 2, and 3, consistently stated that Despicable Me 5 could be made if a good story were found. Renaud added that it would also have to be set in fresh territory. He asserted that the studio would not proceed without a compelling narrative, further revealing that the next chapter could focus on Gru Jr.

Steve Carell, who voices Gru, has also commented on Gru Jr.’s potential during interviews. Carrell, like Renaud, opined that the next installment could focus on the character introduced in Despicable Me 4, joking that it could trail his teenage rebellion. That said, an official confirmation regarding Despicable Me 5 has yet to be announced.
Directed by Pierre Coffin, the official synopsis of Minions & Monsters reads, “This is the rambunctious, ridiculous, and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world, and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
Minions & Monsters is now running in a theater near you.
