Forget Ratatouille 2, These 3 Pixar Movies Actually Need a Sequel
While Ratatouille 2 might not be happening, these three Pixar movies deserve a sequel.
Director Brad Bird recently explained that he’s not interested in making Ratatouille 2, despite pleas from Pixar. “They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react,” Bird said about Pixar asking him about Ratatouille 2. “They’ll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, ‘Would you?’ And I’m like, ‘No, we told that story.'”
Even without Ratatouille 2, Pixar will continue making sequels, especially after the success of Inside 2. The Incredibles 3 is coming in 2028, and Coco 2 and Monsters Inc. 3 are reportedly in development. What other sequels should be in Pixar’s plans? Here are three ideas.
The Pixar movies that still deserve a sequel
A Bug’s Life 2
Let’s go back to 1998 and revisit Pixar’s second movie, A Bug’s Life. In the animated movie, an inventor ant named Flik (Dave Foley) must embark on a journey to find bigger bugs to help defend his colony from Hopper (Kevin Spacey) and his gang of grasshoppers.
A Bug’s Life became a financial hit, grossing $363 million worldwide. It also garnered critical acclaim and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. Because A Bug’s Life is sandwiched between Toy Story and Toy Story 2, it’s largely forgotten by casual fans. That could change with a sequel.
Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton co-directed and co-wrote A Bug’s Life, making him a natural choice to helm a sequel. The story could see Flik and his colony fend off new invaders. Perhaps it could depict the ants finding a new home after being displaced by humans. The possibilities are endless.
Finding Nemo 3
Finding Nemo easily has one of the highest approval ratings among Pixar fans. The story of a father’s quest to find his missing son resonated with so many audience members. Finding Nemo has grossed over $941 million at the worldwide box office, and it became the first Pixar movie to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Finding Nemo received a sequel and spin-off in 2016 with Finding Dory, where the titular Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) embarked on a journey to find her parents. The movie also became a hit, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
Stanton, who directed the previous two Finding entries, could helm the third movie. Finding Nemo 3 could feature a time jump, with Nemo as a father and Marlin as a grandfather. Nemo’s kid could then go missing, forcing him and Marlin to team up to find him. It could also be Finding Marlin, a movie where Nemo and Dory must find Marlin. It’s a proven formula that works.
Toy Story 6
Out of the three movies on this list, Toy Story 6 feels the most likely to happen. Toy Story 5 is already a success story, and it’s only been out for one week. The movie received critical acclaim and box office glory on its way to a franchise-best $160 million domestic opening.
Just like Toy Story 3 concluded Andy’s story, Toy Story 6 could wrap up Bonnie’s journey in the franchise. Bonnie’s increased use of technology, which factored into the fifth movie, could continue in Toy Story 6.
