Why Jason Momoa Didn’t ‘Do S–’ To Bulk up for Lobo in Supergirl

Jason Momoa recently explained why he chose not to bulk up to portray Lobo in Supergirl. The actor has previously undergone intensive training for many of his other roles. However, he had a reasonable explanation for not doing the same for the upcoming superhero movie.

Unlike Aquaman, Jason Momoa didn’t have to bulk for Supergirl’s Lobo

In an interview with Men’s Health, Jason Momoa said that for his role as Lobo in Supergirl, he didn’t have to spend time building a huge muscular body as he did for Aquaman. He said that this is mainly because the filmmakers decided to create the character’s massive stature with prosthetics.

“I didn’t have to do s—!” Momoa shared. He said that there’s “no way” he would have been able to achieve Lobo’s physique in real life, adding that he didn’t have any desire to try.

“I don’t want to walk around like that. I can’t fit in a suit, can’t even fit through a doorway. I’m big enough. But I want him to look that way. You want him to have that size,” the Game of Thrones actor explained.

Momoa has said that he had wanted to portray Lobo on the big screen for a long time. Back in 2025, DC co-CEO James Gunn revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the actor reached out to him on the day he and Peter Safran were announced as the heads of DC Studios to pitch himself for the role. Evidently, Momoa’s wish came true.

Supergirl is the second major DC title under Gunn and Safran’s leadership, and is releasing on June 26. Craig Gillespie directed the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. The movie’s cast also features Milly Alcock in the title role alongside Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and David Corenswet.

The movie is inspired by the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It follows Kara Zor-El on a quest after meeting a young girl named Ruthye, who seeks justice for her father’s murder.

Early reviews for the film have been mixed, with critics generally praising Alcock’s performance. Currently, the movie holds a 57% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
