Supergirl Director Reveals 1 Scene That James Gunn Made Him Change
Ahead of the much-awaited release of the Supergirl movie, director Craig Gillespie has disclosed that James Gunn asked him to change a scene in the film for a very specific reason. He revealed in a recent interview that even though the latter had mostly given him a free hand for the DCU movie, he was very particular about the representation of Krypto. As such, Gunn’s attention to detail about the super-dog ultimately led to the modification of a scene in the film.

The Australian filmmaker noted that he had to alter a bar sequence in Supergirl as it didn’t align with the DC co-CEO’s characterization of Krypto.
“Krypto would be one of the things that James was the most articulate about,” Craig Gillespie remarked while speaking with GamesRadar+, before adding that James Gunn often corrected him on the depiction of the Kryptonian beast. As per Gillespie, Gunn would say, “‘Oh no, no, no, he wouldn’t do that’.”
Gillespie continued, “Obviously, it’s based on James’s dog, so there was some stuff in the bar that you know, maybe where Krypto was paying too much attention, and it’d be like, ‘No, I think you got to change that. He wouldn’t actually care about that, or he wouldn’t do that, or he’d never follow that rule.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ So we got some guidelines with Krypto.”
However, Gunn wasn’t the only one who regularly visited the sets of Supergirl during filming. His DC Studios co-CEO, Peter Safran, also had an active involvement in the making of the movie, albeit in a hands-off manner, as per Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays the villainous Krem in the feature.
“Peter was on set quite often,” Schoenaerts stated. “But he gave also a lot of freedom to Craig [Gillespie], so it was mostly Craig and the actors and the DP, Rob Hardy, that was kind of the trinity working [and] having conversations about what to do and how to do it.”
Led by Milly Alcock, the Supergirl movie is set to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.
