Supergirl Reviews All Agree on 1 Major Flaw in DCU Movie
The first reviews for DC Studios’ Supergirl are in, and many share one common criticism. The second film in the DC Universe will be released later this week in theaters.
What do critics agree is the major flaw with Supergirl?
While the first impressions of Supergirl were mostly positive, full reviews have highlighted one element that many critics disliked. According to most reviews at the time of writing, one of Supergirl’s weakest elements is its villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.
Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky wrote, “While Jason Momoa’s Lobo and Milly Alcock shine, some adaptation choices and a bland villain keep it from greatness.” Smith went on to admit that the villain was relatively flat in the comics too, but “the film offered a chance to fix that.” Smith added, “In an effort to bring more to him, DC decided to make him and his band of space pirates sex traffickers. Like.. what?”

Owen Gleiberman from Variety likened Krem to an “overly derivative ‘Mad Max’ reject.” Gleiberman wrote, “We’re told that Krem, a human trafficker who leads a group of space pirates known as the Brigands, possesses the strength of 10,000 men. But we’d be happier if he had the magnetism of one interesting one.”
The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager wrote that Krem’s “face is covered in decorative studs and who taunts, menaces, and murders like the most stock villain in comic book history.” The writer added, “He’s as pedestrian as Kara’s plight and emblematic of a quest that plays it safe at every turn.”
Similar criticisms appear in other reviews, with But Why Tho’s Jason Flatt adding that Krem “has almost half a personality.” Deadline’s Pete Hammond wrote that he “didn’t buy Schoenaerts and his heavily affected Krem at all”, adding that the villain has “no dimension other than being bad, which is a shame,” comparing it to the 1984 Supergirl movie.
The Supergirl movie is an adaptation of Tom King’s limited miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The story follows Supergirl as she helps a young girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, pursue revenge against villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills for harming Krypto the superdog.
Supergirl opens in theaters on June 26, 2026.
