The Batman 2 Writer Details ‘Viscerally Insane’ Superhero Sequel That’ll Never Happen

The Batman Part 2 co-writer Mattson Tomlin shares new details on his unmade superhero sequel. The writer worked with Matt Reeves on the first Batman film and has also penned other projects.

What did The Batman 2’s Mattson Tomlin say about his superhero sequel that will never happen?

In a new tweet, Tomlin shared details about his pitch for a potential sequel to The Rocketeer. He wrote, “Pitched a sequel with my pal JD Dillard to Disney last year that took place in realtime. 100 harrowing minutes that would have really leaned into how viscerally insane it is to strap yourself to a rocket and save the world from fascists. Bummed it won’t see the light of day.”

Tomlin’s writing suggests Disney passed on the idea. Fans have long wanted to see a sequel to the 1991 classic, with talks of one circulating since the original was in production, though nothing has ever come to fruition. An animated spin-off did debut on Disney Channel in 2019, but was canceled after one season.

In 2023, David Oyelowo offered a promising update on The Rocketeer 2, but fans have yet to hear from Disney. At the time, the film would have been called The Return of the Rocketeer, with J. D. Dillard attached to direct. Dillard announced his departure from the project, but Tomlin’s post suggests he never fully left, circling The Rocketeer sequel.

Earlier this year, the superhero returned in The Rocketeer: The Island, a new comic book from John LaymanJacob Edgar, and K.J. Díaz.

Tomlin’s next film, The Batman Part 2, releases in theaters on October 1, 2027.
