A Minecraft Movie 2 Gets Major Update as Director Teases ‘Bigger’ & ‘Funnier’ Sequel
Director Jared Hess gives a major update on A Minecraft Movie 2. He revealed it in a late-May interview after A Minecraft Movie became one of 2025’s top-grossing films worldwide.
What is the update on A Minecraft Movie 2?
Based on Mojang Studios‘ popular sandbox game, the first part of the movie’s theatrical release was a massive hit, grossing over $960 million worldwide. It also claimed the fifth spot as the highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2025.
Given the film’s global success, Hess began working on a sequel, where he’s already four weeks in. A Minecraft Movie Squared is the title of the second film. In March 2026, it was announced that Kirsten Dunst would play Alex, the female avatar of the game.
According to Entertainment Weekly, executive director Kayleen Walters emphasized Alex’s importance in the game by stating, “Alex is such an important character in the Minecraft world that we want to make sure she’s represented in the movie and she has a great part.”
The new movie will be much “more ambitious,” according to Hess. He also stated, “We’re bouncing all over the place to so many really, really unique locations. It’s bigger, it’s crazier, it’s funnier.”

Moreover, he confirmed fan speculations of expanding the Minecraft world in the movie, noting, “We’re taking Steve and Alex and going on this epic mission back into the Overworld,” he says. “We’re definitely expanding their abilities and things that they have to do to get the job done.”
A Minecraft Movie Squared will have the returning cast, including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and more, to the Overworld, primarily focusing on the main characters, Steve and Alex, as well as Garrett “The Garbage Man”. The trio will explore the deeper sides of the Overworld’s unexplored spaces and take on new challenges.
