How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2: Jim Carrey’s Sequel Is Coming at Right Time

How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2 is officially in the works. The new sequel starring Jim Carrey is coming at exactly the right time, too.

This past week, it was reported that Universal Pictures was officially returning to the world of the Grinch. A sequel to 2000’s classic live-action take on Dr. Seuss’s iconic story is in the works. Better yet, Jim Carrey is set to reprise his role as the titular Grinch, with Ron Howard also set to return to direct the sequel. While reportedly a very tough process to put the makeup on to become the Grinch, Carrey seems ready to step back into the role.

The news was surprising. It never seemed like a sequel was coming, and the original movie was obviously based on an original story. However, a sequel to the movie could come at the right time as excitement over nostalgic stories is at an all-time high.

The Grinch 2 is cashing in on years of nostalgia

It may be surprising for fans of the original film and those who grew up with it to hear, but the live-action take on the Grinch’s story is now 25 years old. The movie, which premiered in 2000, adapts a story that originally released in 1957 and has become a cultural mainstay during the holiday season. For this reason, a sequel to the Grinch hits on two key points.

For one, those who grew up with the original movie are now adults themselves. Not only would they go see the movie because of nostalgia of the original, but many likely have families of their own to bring and introduce to the world of the Grinch. For those who are more familiar with the original story, a new take on the Grinch might be exciting enough to also warrant seeing.

As for kids who might not be familiar with the Grinch at all, they’re definitely familiar with Carrey. Although not the mega star he was in the 1990s, Carrey is known by kids all over the world for his role as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. If adults might not wanna check out the movie, kids who love Carrey’s wild and chaotic take on Robotnik might want to see him in a new format.

Of course, there’s also the fact that the original film becoming a massive success. The original grossed $351 million, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2000 domestically and sixth-highest in the world, as well as the fourth-highest-grossing holiday film of all time. Should a sequel release around Christmas, it is poised to be a smash hit.
