Toy Story 5’s First Box Office Numbers Are Set to Break a Big Record

Toy Story 5 is on track to set a new box office record for the Disney and Pixar franchise. The latest installment brings back beloved characters including Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Woody, and more.

Toy Story 5 targets the franchise’s biggest preview total

Toy Story 5 is expected to earn between $13-$14 million in previews. If it actually reaches that figure, the movie will officially make the record for the best preview collection in the Toy Story franchise, reports Deadline.

The current record is held by the previous installment, 2019’s Toy Story 4, which earned $12 million in previews. It remains the highest-grossing film in the franchise with a global collection of over $1.07 billion.

Toy Story 5 will have to overperform at the box office to become a big blockbuster. That’s because it’s the most expensive movie in Disney and Pixar’s entire Toy Story series. Having a reported budget of $250 million, it’s also the second-most expensive animated film of all time.

On a positive note, the new film is projected to have a strong opening weekend. Domestically, it could earn $140 million or more, beating Toy Story 4’s domestic opening weekend record of $120 million. Globally, the latest installment is expected to make about $275 million in its opening frame.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, the movie features a star-studded voice cast of Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Tom Hanks as Woody, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Keanu Reeves also comes back as the popular character Duke Caboom from the last Toy Story movie. Additional cast members include Annie Potts, Wallace Shawn, Ernie Hudson, and John Ratzenberger, among others.

Toy Story 5 is now playing in theaters.
