Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Greta Gerwig Movie Gets Exciting Theatrical Release Update

Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Netflix movie Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew just got an exciting update for international viewers.

What is the update on Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew?

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be one of the few Netflix original movies to get a theatrical or IMAX release. Now, Netflix has announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle international distribution for the film in markets outside the U.S. (via Variety).

“Greta’s ‘Narnia’ is exactly the kind of bold, ambitious filmmaking we love to champion,” said Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix Film. “While most of our films debut on Netflix, sometimes a film like this comes along and we can give the filmmaker a different canvas and fans a theatrical experience that complements its Netflix release. I can’t wait for people to discover ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,’ and then fall in love with it again and again streaming on Netflix.”

This won’t be the first time Netflix and Sony Pictures have partnered for a film’s release. Last year’s megahit K-Pop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix in select theaters. The two companies also have a global Pay-1 licensing deal, under which all Sony theatrical releases debut on Netflix.

Gerwig’s Narnia film is a first-of-its-kind example of a landmark new deal, as Netflix has traditionally been opposed to exclusive theatrical releases before its projects hit the streamer. A few examples that got a theatrical, albeit limited, release before their Netflix debut were Roma, The Irishman, and Glass Onion. However, Narnia and David Fincher’s upcoming The Adventures of Cliff Booth will mark the first time Netflix movies receive a full 45-day theatrical release. Despite that, Netflix still isn’t fully embracing the theatrical distribution system.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew stars David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and more. The film is written, directed, and produced by Gerwig. Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, and Vincent Sieber-Smith also serve as producers.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be released theatrically on February 12, 2027, followed by its debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
