Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli’s 98% RT Movie Gets Live-Action TV Remake at BBC

A new live-action adaptation of Kiki’s Delivery Service is officially in development. BBC Studios Kids & Family has teamed up two production partners to bring Eiko Kadono’s beloved novel series to television. The project revisits the story that inspired Hayao Miyazaki‘s acclaimed 1989 Studio Ghibli film.

Everything we know about the new Kiki’s Delivery Service adaptation

A new live-action version of Kiki’s Delivery Service is officially in the works, as reported by Variety. The upcoming project will be the first television adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s classic novel series in live action.

The series is being developed through a partnership between BBC Studios Kids & Family, U.K. production company Wheel in Motion, and Japanese media giant Kadokawa Corporation. While the project remains in the early stages of development, producers have already outlined the format and creative direction of the adaptation. Irena Brignull has been tapped to write the adaptation.

According to the development plans, the show will consist of ten episodes, each running approximately 30 minutes. The adaptation will primarily draw from the first installment of Eiko Kadono’s six-book series.

It follows Kiki, a young witch who shifts to the coastal town of Koriko after leaving home at the age of thirteen. As she adjusts to life in an unfamiliar place, she begins building new relationships and finding her place within the community.

The series arrives as the Kiki’s Delivery Service franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary. First published in 1985, the novels have sold millions of copies worldwide and went on to become a major success. The story later reached an even wider audience through Studio Ghibli’s acclaimed 1989 animated feature directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Kadono said, “Kiki is about to set off on another adventure into a new world… I can’t wait to see the series come to life.” Additional details are expected to be announced at a later date.
