Disclosure Day CinemaScore Hints Audience Is Divided on Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Film

Disclosure Day’s audience grade tells a different story than critics do. Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi film received a polarizing CinemaScore, raising questions about its box office future.

Disclosure Day’s CinemaScore doesn’t match its Rotten Tomatoes reviews

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day earned a B CinemaScore from opening-night audiences, according to CinemaScore. The film holds an 81% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 330 reviews. However, its audience Popcornmeter sits at just 72% from over 2,500 verified ratings. The gap between critical praise and audience reception signals a clear disconnect.

A B CinemaScore indicates that audiences had mixed reactions to the film. CinemaScore polls opening-night moviegoers at theaters across North America, grading films A-plus to F. A B grade means the audience was divided, with some enthusiastic and others less satisfied. The grade is unusual for Spielberg, as it ties for his second-lowest alongside Always and Crystal Skull.

The B grade also raises concerns about the film’s box office trajectory. The audience skewed older, with 60 percent over 35, and it also leaned male at 57 percent. The film needs to earn about $300 million globally to be profitable. Industry analyst Sean McNulty said, “This movie needs to 3x its opening weekend to make any sense theatrically, which may be a leap.”

CinemaScore data historically correlates with a film’s long-term performance. Films with higher grades tend to achieve stronger multiples at the box office. A multiple measures how many times a film’s opening weekend total it ultimately earns. Films scoring a B often struggle to maintain strong holds in subsequent weekends.

Disclosure Day opened to $44 million domestically and $93.9 million worldwide. It earned a 61% definite recommend score on PostTrak. Spielberg’s movies tend to have significant box office staying power historically. Toy Story 5 arrives this coming weekend, adding further competition for screens.
