Russell Crowe Explains Why Gladiator 2 ‘Failed’ After Oscar-Winning Original

Almost two years after the release of Gladiator 2, Russell Crowe, who served as the protagonist in Ridley Scott’s original 2000 historical epic, has come out to share his thoughts on the sequel’s underwhelming response. In a recent interview, the Academy Award winner opened up about why Gladiator 2 “failed” in comparison to its predecessor, citing a simple reason in his explanation.

Russell Crowe says Gladiator had one major thing that its sequel lacked

While speaking at the Taormina Film Festival, the Nuremberg star noted that 2024’s sequel to his Gladiator movie did not have the “moral core” of the original Oscar-winning feature.

“For them, in a second movie to destroy that moral centre…it’s very interesting because the second movie barely took the same box office that the first movie took,” Russell Crowe remarked, as per Variety. “That’s 20 years later…When you apply how much of a change there’s been on the value of a dollar, they failed. They failed because they didn’t understand why [the original movie] was successful — it had a moral core.”

The 62-year-old actor then explained how the 2000’s Gladiator not only catered to men but also included elements that attracted female audiences. “The studio at the time didn’t quite understand why [it was a success],” he noted. “That’s the thing a lot of people don’t realize: from the second week of release globally, there were always more women in the theaters than men. You think that on the surface, Gladiator is a movie for men, but if it was a movie for men, it would be about revenge, but it’s not about revenge. It is a movie for women because it is about vengeance.”

Moreover, Crowe summarized his take on why Gladiator 2 failed and the original worked by saying, “[Gladiator] was successful because it had a moral core. In a way, we all want to be that guy who can stay that strong, if you’re a man. And if you’re a woman, we all want a man to love us in that way.”

During the discussion, Crowe also revealed that he had recently wrapped up the shoot for the Henry Cavill-led Highlander reboot.
