Mad Max 6 Can Still Work Despite Furiosa’s Flop for 1 Simple Reason

George Miller reportedly wants to make Mad Max 6. Despite Furiosa‘s box office flop, Miller can still make a successful sixth Mad Max movie for this one reason.

Miller wants to head to the Wasteland at least one final time on the big screen. According to a new report, Miller is interested in making at least one more Mad Max movie and a television show. Then, he plans to sell the Mad Max IP to the highest bidder.

Miller recently visited the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California to pitch Mad Max 6. WB’s movie and TV divisions both passed on the idea. Amazon, Universal, and Sony Pictures have shown interest in Miller’s next Mad Max.

Warner Bros., which distributed the first five movies, likely passed on Mad Max 6 due to the financial failure of 2024’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. With an estimated budget of $168 million, Furiosa only grossed $174 million worldwide. Despite positive reviews, Furiosa did not reach the same Oscar-winning heights as Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max 6 can still work if it focuses on two things: “Mad Max” Rockatansky and star power.

Why star power could be the key to Mad Max 6’s success

Furiosa faced a significant challenge in the absence of the franchise’s lead protagonist, Max Rockatansky. Building an entire Furiosa prequel without Max was an ambitious endeavor that ultimately failed at the box office. Furiosa also replaced Charlize Theron, who played the character in Fury Road, with Anya Taylor-Joy. While Taylor-Joy is a talented actress, she does not have the same fame and international reach as Theron.

The first order of business for Mad Max 6 will be to center a story around Max. You can have another top lead like Furiosa next to Max, but the titular Mad Max must be a major component in the movie.

Speaking of stars, it would be in Miller’s best interest to cast an A-list actor to play Max Rockatansky. Although Chris Hemsworth is a big name, Furiosa’s other two leads, Taylor-Joy and Tom Burke, do not have the same star power as Fury Road’s Theron and Tom Hardy.

Casting Hardy for Mad Max 6 is probably out of the question due to the many problems he caused during the production of Fury Road. However, casting an actor with the same fame and presence as Hardy is very achievable. Plus, if this really is Miller’s last Mad Max movie, it should attract top talent.
