Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu Added a Luke Skywalker Reference at the Last Minute
The Mandalorian and Grogu includes a late-added reference to Luke Skywalker. The information was revealed by director Jon Favreau two weeks after the Star Wars film’s release.
What Luke Skywalker reference was added to The Mandalorian and Grogu at the last minute?
In The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s a segment where Mando is injured, and Grogu, or Baby Yoda, has to take care of him. During the sequence, one shot shows Baby Yoda seated on a tree trunk and meditating, which is a callback to Grogu’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker from The Book of Boba Fett.
Director Jon Favreau revealed in the film’s director’s commentary (via The Laughing Place) that he came up with the idea for that callback on the day of filming. Favreau theorizes that Grogu learned to meditate from Luke, and the former Padawan could be “continuing Jedi training on his own.” The crew shot two different angles of the scene using leftover time between shots.
Besides that, Favreau also revealed that the film contains references to Apocalypse Now, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, My Neighbor Totoro, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He also revealed that a family of raccoons moved into one of the practical Nal Hutta sets because it looked very realistic.

Viewers can listen to Favreau’s commentary by using the TheaterEars app during screenings. However, there is a caveat, as the feature is only available in the U.S.
Despite its references to other Star Wars films, The Mandalorian and Grogu failed to generate significant audience interest. At the time of writing, the film has grossed over $297 million worldwide, putting it lower than Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film has a 62% score on Rotten Tomatoes, although the audience score is higher at 87%.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is now playing in theaters.
