Ice Age 6 Teaser Trailer Shows Disney Might Have Hit a Nostalgia Dud

With the release of the first Ice Age 6 teaser trailer, it seems like Disney has failed to consider whether fans wanted another Ice Age movie. Within five hours of its debut, the teaser trailer has gained over 525k views on YouTube. This is quite a low turnout, especially for a new Disney movie with an existing blockbuster franchise.

Ice Age: Boiling Point is directed by John C. Donkin. The sixth installment features the return of Ray Romano as Manny, Denis Leary as Diego, Queen Latifah as Ellie, John Leguizamo as Sid, and Simon Pegg as Buck Wild. The movie will arrive in theaters on February 5, 2027.

Why Ice Age 6 might be a mistake for Disney?

In the Ice Age 6 teaser trailer, fans got a glimpse of the main characters’ return, teasing that the gang will be facing another world-ending challenge. Since the video doesn’t really give fans an idea of what to expect from the new sequel, it’s unclear if seeing the characters’ fun dynamics again would be enough to hype up the film for the fans. Nostalgia has been a huge driving point for studios trying to revive major film franchises. However, this might not be the case for Disney’s newest Ice Age movie, especially when its teaser trailer hasn’t received the level of attention we see from previous Disney releases.

The studio might have overestimated the fan demand for Ice Age: Boiling Point. Based on the Rotten Tomatoes scores that previous sequels had received, it showed that the franchise’s approval ratings kept declining with each release. From the first installment’s 76% RT score, the franchise’s critic ratings notably dropped to 18% RT score with its most recent sequel, Ice Age: Collision Course. That’s why it wouldn’t be a surprise if the upcoming movie also ends up with the same results.

I’m convinced that the teaser trailer was a missed opportunity for the studio to assure fans the upcoming Ice Age movie will finally put the franchise on the right track. However, since there is still plenty of time before the movie hits the big screen, it would be interesting to see if upcoming trailers and promotions inspire more confidence.
