Masters of the Universe’s 1st Great Joke Happens Before the Movie Truly Starts

Right before the new live-action movie officially begins, audiences can spot Masters of the Universe‘s first joke during the opening title sequence. The joke is actually a fun and clever tribute to the original animated TV show.

Amazon MGM Studios‘ Masters of the Universe movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as the long-lost prince of Eternia. Joining him are Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, James Purefoy as King Randor, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, and Jared Leto as Skeletor, with Kristin Wiig as the voice of Roboto.

How did the Masters of the Universe movie’s opening pay tribute to the original series?

Ahead of the Masters of the Universe’s highly anticipated theatrical debut, it has been confirmed that the new movie will include a modified version of the studio’s opening logo. MGM (now Amazon MGM Studios) has one of the most recognizable intros in film history, featuring a lion roaring. To pay homage to the original animated series, the Masters of the Universe movie has opted to put its own fun twist on the iconic studio opening, where it replaces the lion with He-Man’s fan-favorite companion, Battle Cat.

In the show, Battle Cat was He-Man’s fiercely loyal talking tiger. Just like He-Man, Battle Cat also has another persona in the form of Prince Adam’s timid pet Cringer. Voicing the green-and-yellow-furred tiger in the film is Tom Wilton. The new movie opens with a full-grown Battle Cat, showing how much the creative team respects the original IP. This also serves as an assurance to fans that the movie was made with the intention of staying true to the source material.

At the moment, the upcoming PG-13 movie has already garnered a Certified Fresh rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 116 reviews. It is scheduled to arrive in theaters this Friday, June 5.
