Despite the commercial success of Evil Dead Rise, a direct sequel may not be as certain as fans had hoped. The comments come more than two years after Evil Dead Rise became a breakout hit.
Evil Dead Rise director answers Part 2 possibilities
Lee Cronin has weighed in on the possibility of directing another Evil Dead film.
During his recent ScreenRant interview, the filmmaker reflected on his experience with Evil Dead Rise and discussed his connection to the horror franchise following the success of the 2023 chapter. Though Cronin did not discuss any plans for a potential sequel, he emphasized that the direction of the franchise is best addressed by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell.
He explained, “I feel very, very lucky to have been the steward of that franchise for a moment in time, and to make Evil Dead Rise and to catalyze in a way that’s allowed the core OG inventors in Sam, Rob, and Bruce. So I always think that that’s better for them to answer because it is very much their world, and I’m really respectful of that.”
The filmmaker also expressed enthusiasm about the franchise continuing beyond his film. According to Cronin, “But I’m just really glad that there’s more because I always felt that there was the opportunity to tell more Evil Dead stories. So even just as a movie fan, I’m looking forward to seeing how they’re received in the world.”
During the discussion, Cronin also revealed that he had been actively considering a return to the Evil Dead universe and was also developing a separate feature based on a real-life paranormal case that took place in Ireland. However, both projects were eventually pushed aside when The Mummy entered the picture. “And then The Mummy just kind of took over,” he said.
Cronin’s comments come as the Evil Dead franchise continues to expand following the success of the 2023 film.
