Forgotten Reboot of Angelina Jolie’s Video Game Movies Gets Revived on Streaming
A long-overlooked reboot has found a fresh audience after climbing HBO Max’s movie rankings. The action-adventure film is now among the platform’s most-watched titles. Years after its theatrical run, the 2018 reboot is getting renewed attention from streaming viewers. The movie, which introduced a new version of the iconic treasure hunter, has surged into HBO Max’s Top 10 chart and is once again drawing interest from fans of the long-running franchise.
Tomb Raider finds new life streaming on HBO Max
According to the latest data from FlixPatrol, Tomb Raider currently sits at No. 3 on HBO Max’s US movie chart. It trails only a handful of titles and ranks alongside films such as The Bride, Rampage and The Moment. The resurgence comes eight years after the movie first arrived in theaters, showing that the franchise still has strong appeal among streaming audiences.
Unlike the earlier films led by Angelina Jolie, the 2018 reboot took inspiration from the modern video game series developed by Crystal Dynamics. The story follows Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer. Her search for answers leads her to a remote island connected to her father’s disappearance, forcing her to test her limits in a dangerous fight for survival.
The film stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft alongside Walton Goggins, Hannah John-Kamen, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas and Nick Frost. Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug directed the project. It was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros. Pictures and GK Films.
While critics were divided, many fans loved Vikander’s more grounded take on the character and the movie’s closer connection to the game. The film currently holds a 52% Tomatometer score and a 55% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDb users have rated it 6.3 out of 10.
Financially, the reboot performed reasonably well. Produced on a reported budget of about $94 million, it earned nearly $275 million worldwide. However, that was not enough to launch a major new film series, but it proved there was still interest in Lara Croft beyond the Angelina Jolie era.
