Scary Movie 6 vs. Masters of the Universe: Box Office Predictions Reveal Who’ll Win

One of these movies costs six times more than the other, and it might not matter. Box office projections paint a wild picture for Scary Movie 6 and Masters of the Universe this weekend.

Scary Movie 6 set to smash Masters of the Universe at box office

Paramount and Miramax’s Scary Movie 6 from the Wayans Brothers targets a $40 million domestic and $70 million worldwide opening this weekend, Deadline reports. The comedy sequel looks set to nearly double Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe reboot at the box office. The He-Man film projects a $30 million domestic and $50 million-plus worldwide bow by comparison.

Miramax financed the sixth Scary Movie entry for $30 million and reunited the Wayans family on both sides of the camera. The Michael Tiddes-directed feature arrives at 3,400 theaters with North American previews starting Thursday at 2 p.m. It simultaneously launches in 53 offshore markets, including Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

International projections place Scary Movie between $25 million and $30 million for its opening weekend abroad. The franchise’s five previous entries have collectively grossed $896.3 million worldwide to date. This latest installment could consequently push the 26-year-old series past the $1 billion global milestone.

Masters of the Universe, meanwhile, opens at 3,500 locations against a hefty $170 million production budget. Travis Knight directs the reboot starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, and Jared Leto as Skeletor. The film currently holds a 74% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes heading into release.

The He-Man reboot rolls out across 86 territories with approximately $20 million expected internationally. First-choice audiences trend strongly toward men over 25, given the franchise’s 1980s origins. Fathom Entertainment additionally releases The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act at 2,221 theaters this weekend. The Australian adult animated feature targets between $15 million and $18 million domestically.
