John Wick: Donnie Yen’s Spin-off Movie Casts How to Train Your Dragon Star
Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off Caine has cast a How to Train Your Dragon star. The actor joins an impressive cast including Dacre Montgomery and Rina Sawayama.
Who has joined the cast of Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off movie?
Mason Thames, known for starring in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake and The Black Phone, has joined the cast of Caine (via Deadline). It remains unknown what Thames will be playing.
He has also appeared in Apple TV’s hit show For All Mankind and starred in last year’s Black Phone 2, streaming now on Netflix. The actor will reprise the role of Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon 2 and will next be seen in Dave Franco’s upcoming comedy Idiots.
Caine follows the titular blind assassin, first introduced in John Wick 4. The film is said to be “blending precision choreography with emotional storytelling,” following the events of John Wick 4.

Caine will be the second spin-off in the John Wick franchise, following Ana de Armas’ Ballerina in 2025. Outside of movies, the franchise also spawned the prequel series The Continental. Neither spin-off managed to reach the heights of Baba Yaga himself. Despite his apparent death in John Wick: Chapter 4, a fifth mainline entry led by Keanu Reeves is currently in development.
However, it may take a while before fans see John Wick 5, as Lionsgate was recently sued over copyright infringement issues. The studio has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
Caine is directed by Donnie Yen from a screenplay written by Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski, Keanu Reeves, and John Saunders are producing the film. Yen will also serve as an executive producer, along with Courtney Brock.
The Caine spin-off currently doesn’t have a release date.
