‘We Can’t Beat It’: RDJ Admits Avengers: Doomsday Can’t Top Infinity War or Endgame

Robert Downey Jr. believes Avengers: Doomsday is no match for Infinity War and Endgame. The Doctor Doom of the upcoming anticipated MCU movie has explained why the next Avengers film needs to be its own thing.

What did Robert Downey Jr. say about Avengers: Doomsday, Infinity War, and Endgame?

During the special screening of Avengers: Infinity War at the 2026 SXSW panel, Robert Downey Jr.’s appearance surprised fans alongside The Russo Brothers.

Talking to fans, the acclaimed actor, best known for portraying Tony Stark or Iron Man in the MCU, reflected on the monumental status of Infinity War and Endgame within the franchise. According to him, the two films set an almost impossible benchmark that is incredibly difficult to replicate. “What we’ve been laboring long and hard over… we can’t beat it – we can’t stand on the shoulders of these giants of Infinity War and Endgame.”

He added, “So we’re literally zeroing out the board and we’re going to try to earn your trust and respect all over again. With the likes of [directors Joe and Anthony Russo], I think we’ve got a pretty good shot.”

That echoes what The Russo Brothers said about Doomsday and how it’ll carve out its own identity in the MCU. During the SXSW panel, Joe Russo said, “This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past.”

While Downey Jr. returns to the franchise as Victor von Doom, Doomsday will also see Chris Evans’ comeback as Steve Rogers or Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

The ensemble cast also includes Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Letitia Wright, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Channing Tatum, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Pedro Pascal, among others.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
