HBO Max subscribers can now watch one of director Steven Spielberg’s popular sci-fi action movies. During its theatrical run, the 2018 film became a box office hit, grossing over $607 million worldwide.

What Steven Spielberg movie is now on HBO Max?

As of today, Spielberg’s 2018 film adaptation of Ready Player One is now officially available to stream on HBO Max. The story takes place in a distant future where most of the population spends most of their time living in a virtual reality universe rather than living life in the real world. It was based on Ernest Cline’s award-winning 2011 novel of the same name. The movie starred Tye Sheridan as Wade/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Sam/Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, Lena Waithe as Helen/Aech, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow/The Curator, Mark Rylance as James Halliday/Anorak, Hannah John-Kamen as F’Nale, Ralph Ineson as Rick, and more.

“In 2045, the creator of a virtual reality universe promises his fortune to the first person to discover a digital Easter egg. Soon, young Wade Watts finds himself in a reality-bending treasure hunt through the mysterious and fantastical world,” reads the official synopsis.

Ready Player One was directed by Spielberg, with Zak Penn and Cline writing the screenplay. Since its debut, the film has received an approval rating of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, while its Popcornmeter score is slightly higher at 77%. It received one Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. In 2024, Spielberg confirmed that he will only be producing the long-awaited sequel, which is still in development.
