Anthony and Joe Russo addressed their Marvel future after Avengers: Secret Wars. They offered a mixed response when asked about it at a recent discussion.
The Russos on if they’ll make more MCU movies after Avengers: Secret Wars
While interacting with Deadline at SXSW London, Anthony Russo, when asked if he and Joe would make more MCU films after Avengers: Secret Wars, responded that it would be their last film, saying, “This is it.”
He added that when they made their fourth Marvel movie, Avengers: Endgame (2019), they had completed their four-part story that began with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “For us, it was very much intended to be an ending,” he further stated.
The filmmaker then said that the stories for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were complete. He continued, “[They] speak with one another as two films, and they form a complete expression.”
Anthony Russo acknowledged that working with Marvel after Secret Wars was a “possibility.” However, he stressed that the duo’s narrative focus was currently on that film. Meanwhile, Joe Russo quipped that they will let fans know if they are reteaming with the studio after looking at photos of themselves in 2028.
Also at the event, Joe Russo offered a major update about the film’s production. He shared that they were in the midst of pre-production, adding, “We like doing things, many things, at the same time.”
Moreover, he revealed that they were still doing some work for Doomsday, which will not wrap up until November. He clarified, “[It] just means they have to give it to other people to finish it for a few weeks.”
Principal photography for Secret Wars will reportedly begin in the summer. Joe Russo confirmed to Collider early last year, before its release date was pushed back, that filming would last for six months.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18 this year, while Avengers: Secret Wars releases on December 17, 2027. In addition to directing, The Russos are co-producing through their production banner, AGBO.
